Wither Reddit (Part 2)

Following up on the Wither Reddit post, there is now news that Reddit will require login in order to view content. There is plenty discussion across many sites, as well as a post from the CEO. Should I even link to a Reddit post anymore, as all those links will soon become essentially dead?

With the termination of RSS, I figured that I would use Reddit much less than I have been, but I would still be able to manually check for news every now and again. Requiring login is much more inconvenient!

Perhaps this change is good news. I imagine that RSS is something that the vast majority of Reddit users do not care about. Terminating RSS is a huge change for me, but the local communities on Reddit that I value would no doubt still go on, and I would still want to check that content. Requiring login affects many more people, however. Many technical communities have already left Reddit, but this change will be a significant incentive for many other communities to leave Reddit as well. Perhaps the local communities will find a new home, at someplace that supports RSS!

Many software options already exist. Lemmy is open source (repository), and there are many instances online, such as Lemmy.World and sh.itjust.works. These sites of course support RSS. It is just a matter of communities moving.

People are already sitting back to Watch Reddit Die.
